Each October, parishes across the Diocese of Erie take part in the October Count, recording Sunday Mass attendance throughout the month. Collected across all 13 counties, the data provides a consistent snapshot of participation and helps inform how the diocese plans for the future.
While the October Count is not a scientific measure, it offers a clear look at how parish communities are gathering week to week.
The most recent data reflects a familiar story—one shaped by disruption, resilience and gradual return.
Following significant declines during the pandemic, Sunday Mass attendance has shown steady stabilization.
Parish communities continue to gather, with participation increasing compared to recent years, even as overall numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels.
The trend reflects a Church that is adapting while continuing to serve the faithful across a large and diverse region.
The Diocese of Erie spans more than 10,000 square miles, encompassing both urban centers and rural communities. Across this landscape, priests, parish leaders and staff work together to meet the needs of over 28,000 Catholics in 76 parishes. The October Count helps provide a broader understanding of how those communities are engaging in parish life today.
At the same time, the data reflects longer-term shifts that extend beyond recent years. Both Mass attendance and the number of active diocesan priests have declined over time.
While the ratio of priests to those attending Mass has remained relatively consistent, the reality of ministry has changed. Many priests now serve multiple parishes, missions and secondary churches, carrying increased pastoral and administrative responsibilities.
These realities continue to shape pastoral planning across the diocese. Parish structures, Mass schedules and collaborations among parish communities are regularly evaluated to ensure that the Eucharist and the sacraments remain accessible while supporting sustainable and vibrant parish life.
The October Count serves as one tool among many in this ongoing work—offering a grounded, consistent look at participation while helping diocesan leadership respond thoughtfully to changing needs.
